Gibson Dunn Hits Herbert Smith Freehills For First London Hire of 2021

Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher has hired a London real estate finance partner from Herbert Smith Freehills, as it continues its expansion streak in the base.

Robert Carr joins the U.S. firm after over 14 years at HSF, with over four spent as partner, according to LinkedIn.

Ken Doran, Gibson Dunn chairman and managing partner, said in a statement:  “Rob has an excellent reputation in the London real estate and finance communities.

“He will be an excellent addition and perfect complement to our London transactional team, an area of strategic focus and growth for the firm.”

A Herbert Smith Freehills spokesperson said: “During his time with Herbert Smith Freehills [Carr] made a significant contribution to our real estate finance practice and we wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Gibson Dunn most recently grew its London base in November 2020 when it brought on the EMEA head of conduct risk at Morgan Stanley, Matthew Nunan.

Prior to that, other London hires last year included Kirkland & Ellis leveraged finance partner Ben Myers, disputes partner Susy Bullock from UBS, and Ben Fryer from Mayer Brown.

Fellow U.S. firms have continued to hit hiring hard as we enter the new year.

At the end of December, Latham & Watkins surprised the market with the hire of private equity star Paul Dolman from Travers Smith, in a move heralded by several market commenters as “a big win” for the firm.
