The Ministry of Justice has launched a consultation on the level at which legal aid fees for advising and representing refugees falling within the scope of the Illegal Migration Bill. Alex Chalk, the Lord Chancellor, writes in the foreword:
Given the high volume of cases anticipated as a result of this legislation, we are proposing to pay higher fees for related immigration work. This will make sure legal aid practitioners are properly remunerated for the important work they do – and ensure fair payment and access to justice for all who seek it.
A welcome change of tone there compared to some of his colleagues. A 15% increase on current hourly rates is proposed.
